چکیده

The genetic variability and structure of the European eel ( Anguilla anguilla L.) in populations throughout Europe was reassessed using 15 allozymic loci, seven of which were polymorphic. Seven sites were sampled on a latitudinal gradient across the natural continental range, extending from southern France to southern Norway. Heterozygosity ( H e = 0.05) and level of polymorphism (P = 0.43) were comparable to other marine fish. Populations were poorly differentiated ( G ST = 0.014, F ST = 0.002), which is not surprising considering the high dispersal capability of the European eel. However, a significant geographical cline was detected at two alleles ( IDH-1 * 100 and GPI-1 * 110 ), and genetic distances ( D CE ) were concordant with geographical coastal distances. Mantel tests, pairwise F ST ’s and multidimensional scaling analyses identify three distinct groups: Northern Europe, Western Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. We propose that the clinal genetic structure in the European eel may be due to (1) isolation by distance (as recently detected with microsatellites), (2) temporal reproductive separation, (3) post-larval selective forces, (4) contact between formerly separated groups or (5) some combination thereof. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 77 , 509–521

Viral diseases of wild and farmed European eel Anguilla anguilla with particular reference to the Netherlands.

Diseases are an important cause of losses and decreased production rates in freshwater eel farming, and have been suggested to play a contributory role in the worldwide decline in wild freshwater eel stocks. Three commonly detected pathogenic viruses of European eel Anguilla anguilla are the aquabirnavirus eel virus European (EVE), the rhabdovirus eel virus European X (EVEX), and the alloherpes...

All roads lead to home: panmixia of European eel in the Sargasso Sea.

European eels (Anguilla anguilla) spawn in the remote Sargasso Sea in partial sympatry with American eels (Anguilla rostrata), and juveniles are transported more than 5000 km back to the European and North African coasts. The two species have been regarded as classic textbook examples of panmixia, each comprising a single, randomly mating population. However, several recent studies based on con...

Isolation and characterization of 12 dinucleotide microsatellites in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla L., and tests of amplification in other species of eels.

Twelve polymorphic dinucelotide microsatellites in the freshwater eel Anguilla anguilla L. were isolated and characterized. Genetic diversity was assessed in eels from Lake Constance, Germany. Allele numbers ranged from five to 26 per locus with observed heterozygosities between 0.125 and 0.875. A portion of locus AangCT77 aligns with a transcribed region of the zebrafish gene crystallin beta B...

Panmixia in the European eel: a matter of time...

The European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) has been a prime example of the panmixia paradigm because of its extraordinary adaptation to the North Atlantic gyral system, semelparous spawning in the Sargasso Sea and long trans-oceanic migration. Recently, this view was challenged by the suggestion of a genetic structure characterized by an isolation-by-distance (IBD) pattern. This is only likely if ...

Isolation and characterization of expressed sequence tag-linked microsatellite loci for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

A European eel (Anguilla anguilla) expressed sequence tag database consisting of 795 contigs and 4008 singletons was screened for microsatellites sequences. Primers were designed to amplify 96 repeats, of which 86 gave good quality amplification products. Twenty-eight microsatellites were selected for further microsatellite genotyping. Only two loci were found to be monomorphic; out of the 26 p...
